5 Major Retail Chains Closing Doors in Iowa: April 2026

From the major shopping hubs in Des Moines and Cedar Rapids to the regional centers in Davenport and Williamsburg, here are the five major retail chains closing doors in Iowa this month.

1. Big Lots

Following its ongoing Chapter 11 bankruptcy process and a failure to secure a buyer for its underperforming sites, Big Lots is in the final stage of liquidating its Iowa footprint. Multiple locations are scheduled to cease operations by April 30, 2026. Final "Going Out of Business" sales are reaching their peak at:

  • Des Moines (4365 Merle Hay Rd)
  • Davenport (3562 N Brady St)

2. Express

Following its bankruptcy filing and subsequent restructuring, the fashion retailer Express is "right-sizing" its physical footprint to focus on top-performing flagship stores. As part of this move, several Iowa locations are reaching their final day of operation this month. Shoppers will see final closures at:

  • Cedar Rapids (Lindale Mall)
  • Davenport (Northpark Mall)
  • Williamsburg (Outlets Williamsburg)

3. Walgreens

The pharmacy giant is continuing its aggressive plan to shutter 1,200 underperforming stores nationwide by 2027. This April, Iowa is seeing a targeted round of closures specifically in areas with high store density. While the company is investing in modernized hubs, older "low-traffic" branches with expiring leases—particularly in the Greater Des Moines and Cedar Rapids areas—are slated to close by the end of the month.

4. Macy’s

As part of its "Bold New Chapter" strategy to shutter 150 underperforming stores nationwide by the end of 2026, Macy’s is reviewing its remaining presence in the Midwest. While major flagship locations are being prioritized for "Reimagine" investments, at least one regional department store in the Iowa market is on the April chopping block as the company moves closer to its final closure goals.

5. Tuesday Morning

Following its latest round of bankruptcy filings, the home goods and decor retailer is finalizing the closure of its remaining Iowa footprint. The company is shifting its resources to high-traffic regions, leading to the permanent shuttering of its final stores in the state this month, including the location at Coral Ridge Mall in Coralville.

Important Information for Iowa Shoppers

  • Final Liquidations: At Big Lots and Express, discounts have generally reached the 70% to 90% range. Note that all sales at these closing locations are final, with no returns or exchanges accepted.
  • Gift Card Alert: Consumer advocates recommend using any remaining gift cards for Big Lots or Express immediately. Once the final doors lock on April 30, these credits may become void or much more difficult to redeem.
  • Prescription Transfers: For closing Walgreens locations, patient records are typically transferred automatically to the nearest surviving branch. Customers should use the Walgreens mobile app to confirm their new pickup point before their next refill.
